To multiply by 0.1, 0.01, 0.001 etc. it is easy to look at what to do through a pattern.

6 x 1000 = 6000

6 x 100 = 600

6 x 10 = 60

6 x 1 = 6

6 x 0.1 = 0.6

6 x 0.01 = 0.06

6 x 0.001 = 0.006

The pattern is an extension on multiplying by 10 100 1000, which most students find easy to do and easy to remember. The steps are to count how many places after the decimal the 1 is, and simply move the decimal that many places to the left. If you have a hard time remembering this start with what you already know, which is multiplying by 100, 10, 1, and then continue the pattern. Notice in the pattern the decimal is actually always moving left.
